Owner/teacher Dylan Kay set up Auckland Guitar School in 2012, on moving to Auckland from the UK.
“Guitar has been my life for nearly 35 years now, my passion ignited by hearing live blues guitarists and working through a friend’s huge record collection. Within months I was sitting in with local bands, and the love affair grew from there. Early on, I discovered the joy in teaching others to play.
I have been a professional musician since 1996, the journey so far including teaching for many years at London’s top guitar school, studying with the world’s finest jazz educators at Berklee College of Music, performing at the O2 Arena in London with top UK session musicians, playing jazz festivals with my own bands, recording albums, writing music, touring, writing columns for music magazines and spending nearly every single working day with a guitar in my hand.”
Why Auckland Guitar School was set up
“My goal in setting up Auckland Guitar School was to use my unique skills, experience and training to create a guitar school like no other. A school that creates real musicians – regardless of whether they want to just play a few favourite songs by the campfire, or aspire to play at a professional level.
Where everyone can benefit from being part of a uniquely supportive community of guitar players and take advantage of regular performance opportunities if they wish. Where students have fun and become good musicians who can think and create, and experience what playing music is all about rather than just “painting by numbers”.
Thanks to a lot of hard work and the incredible team at the School, I’m proud to say that we are achieving this every day, and always striving to make it even better.”
